Stony Brook University has joined the Tier 3 charter program of JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services, becoming the tenth Association of Research Libraries (ARL) institution in a cohort working together to develop responsible, scalable approaches to AI-assisted collections stewardship.

As a Tier 3 charter participant, Stony Brook will use JSTOR Seeklight to accelerate description and transcription at scale, and to surface collection‑level insights that inform processing priorities and user‑facing access. Powered by AI, Seeklight fits naturally into the Stony Brook Libraries AI-first digital strategies and initiatives to transform library services. Stony Brook will also have access to the full, integrated JSTOR Stewardship platform, which includes digital asset management, long-term digital preservation from Portico, and the opportunity to share materials directly to the JSTOR platform to maximize discovery, accessibility, and impact into the research ecosystem.

As a charter participant, Stony Brook will contribute feedback and use cases through working groups and community conversations, helping shape both the development of JSTOR Seeklight and shared practices for responsible, AI‑assisted stewardship.

“With JSTOR Stewardship, we can strengthen our digital collections strategy while partnering with JSTOR and peer institutions to explore new approaches to stewardship,” said Karim Boughida, Dean of Libraries at Stony Brook University. “It’s a leadership opportunity for our library to experiment thoughtfully with description and transcription at scale, better serving our community while keeping experts firmly in charge.”

“Stony Brook’s decision to join the Tier 3 charter program reflects a deep commitment to the long‑term care and use of distinctive collections, and to responsible innovation in academic libraries,” added Roger Schonfeld, Managing Director, JSTOR Stewardship. “Karim and his team are ideal partners for this work, and we’re looking forward to learning with them as they adopt JSTOR Seeklight as part of their AI innovation strategy to help shape technologies and practices that others can build on.”
